Labour wins seats in Lambeth

Cllr Lib Peck, Cllr Diana Morris and Cllr Edward Davie have been elected to represent Thornton Ward.
Chuka Umunna MP has been elected as Member of Parliament for Streatham.

The Labour Party also won the two other parliamentary seats within Lambeth, as well as gaining a larger majority of seats in Lambeth Council.
Thornton crime rate plummets

Thornton crime rate plummets

Reported crime in Thornton has fallen by 15.4% in the last year and is down nearly a third in the last three months.
Our community, already with the lowest crime rate in Lambeth, where it has also fallen significantly is safer than ever thanks to the efforts of the police, local people and the Labour council and government.
The encouraging statistics were published at Thornton’s Safer Neighbourhood Panel meeting that is made up of the community police, council officials, tenants and resident association representatives and members of the public.
Labour candidate for Thornton Ed Davie took part and though the Liberal Democrats say they are concerned about local people failed to send anyone to listen to their views.
The panel congratulated the police representatives and agreed that even more progress could be made with more activities for young people.
Labour’s local manifesto promises supervised youth activities within a mile of every home in Lambeth and Ed promised that, if elected, he would lobby the council to ensure that investment is made in the ward.
Ed said: ‘If you’ve been a victim of crime you’re obviously not going to take much comfort from statistics and we mustn’t ever forget that any crime is too much and be complacent.
‘That said Labour’s massive investment in local policing, youth activities, education and poverty reduction combined with the hard work of local people and the police is really paying off.’

Mayor of Lambeth recognises work of local resident

The Mayor of Lambeth recently awarded the Civic Award for Clapham and Stockwell to Donna C Henry, resident of Clapham Park Estate, and Chair of Clapham Park Project. Donna has been actively involved with the Clapham Park New Deal for Communities (NDC) project since 2000, after recognising the deterioration in the area, and with a group of fellow residents fought to address the problems.

After joining the Clapham Park Estate Tenants and Residents Association (CPETRA), Donna was persuasive in the council’s decision to identify Clapham Park as the NDC area for the borough.

After receiving the award, Donna C Henry commented “I was delighted to have received a Civic Award, and as Chair of Clapham Park Project I see this as recognition of all the hard work my fellow resident Board members and I have undertaken to improve the Clapham Park area.”

New ice age for Streatham

New ice age for Streatham

Labour Councillors greeted the news today that months of careful negotiations to bring fantastic new facilities to Streatham have paid off as Tesco formally agreed a massive investment in Streatham’s Leisure facilities. This investment will see the development of a new ice rink, leisure centre, housing complex and a Tesco store by December 2012. Tesco have given their backing to the scheme that the council has been championing and in particular they have listened to Labour calls for a high quality temporary ice rink which will accommodate all existing ice activities while development takes place.

Cllr Lib Peck, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, and Thornton Ward Councillor said, “This investment will breathe new life into Streatham; it’s what we have worked long and hard for.  We know how important the ice rink is to the area and it has been central to our negotiations. I am very pleased that Tesco are committed to delivering this project and I would like to thank residents for their patience. I know it has been a frustrating wait but I think that this result was worth it.”

Ed Davie, Labour candidate for Thornton Ward said: “New leisure and shopping facilities, not to mention service and construction jobs on our doorstep will be great for Thornton. Congratulations to Lib who has worked tirelessly to get Tesco to live up to its commitments.”

The next stage is for the council to formalise the agreement at a special council cabinet meeting to be held on the 29th March.

Making our area safer

Your team of local councillors has worked hard over the last few years to make our area safer. We have picked up on local concerns about speed and tried to boost recycling.
We pushed for anti speeding measures in Hydethorpe, Emmanuel and Weir Roads. The smiley face monitors (Speed Information Devices) were introduced.
We demanded more cycle racks. They were introduced outside the local shops on Emmanuel Road and we used some of our local community fund to support more outside St Stephens Church.
Working with residents, we promoted safety and environmental improvements to Cavendish Road. This is now happening with build outs into the road to slow traffic and more trees planted to improve the landscape.
We campaigned with residents for a crossing in Emmanuel Road. We got one near the top end of Emmanuel; and about to get one at the other end of the road by the mini roundabout.
We requested a contra –flow for cyclists at the end of Hydethorpe Road. This is being introduced.
We have been consistent in our support for a 20mph zone and are pleased to let you know that the council has put aside money to introduce one. They will be consulting on one soon.
